Your Body Mass Index or BMI, is a ratio calculated from your height and weight.  Your BMI may also gauge your risk for certain diseases as a result of being overweight. The higher your BMI, the higher your risk for diseases such as high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes and certain types of cancers.

This standard BMI calculation only applies to Adults as does the BMI chart below. It shows the different BMI and weight categories that are used to classify individuals.
